L-Carnitine - Top Supplement for Fat Loss

L-Carnitine is one of my top supplements for the breakdown of fat and the production of energy. L-Carnitine converts fat into readily available fuel (energy) and elevates levels of certain enzymes needed to metabolise sugars, starches and other carbohydrates. For fat to be used as fuel, Carnitine is essential as it is the only nutrient in the human body that can transport fat to be burned as fuel. Another health benefit of Carnitine is that it can also decrease Triglycerides and increase HDL so it may help with some cholesterol issues.
L-Carnitine should not just be used on its own, it needs to be taken alongside a Low Glycaemic Index diet, as it is an insulin sensitive supplement. This basically means alongside a bad or High GI diet it will not work as effectively.
Here's the evidence:
A group of 18 overweight adolescents aged between 13-17 were divided into two groups. Both groups were given multi-vitamins, similar diet, similar exercise and nutritional education. One of the groups received 2000mg of L-Carnitine per day and the other group were given a placebo.
The results show that the group taking the L-Carnitine supplement had experienced an average weight loss of 11lbs, whilst the placebo group only lost an average of 1lb. The L-Carnitine group had also shown a far greater increase in lean body mass, as well as the loss of body fat.
